Artist: Shareef Sarhan
Title: City and Letters
Shareef uses calligraphy in his artwork as he is fascinated with its historical use as a tool for communication by Arabs. However, when it is immersed into art, he believes the true beauty of calligraphy is highlighted.
In his artwork Shareef takes on the original form of calligraphy (from thousands of years ago) where they do not dot any of the letters. This way he allows every person to read and depict the artwork from their own perspective. Shareef layers the calligraphy with strokes of paint that symbolize the crowded cities of Palestine where faces and bodies move so quick it becomes a blur.
